-
The word Cloister comes from ‘Claustrum’, the Latin word for enclosure, barrier or fence. Here it doesn’t refer to the monastic establishment but more to the architectural form typically colonnaded around a garden. Cloister is also a verb that means to seclude from the word.

The main feature of the installation is a seating enclosure designed for office spaces. It both encloses and defines a space. the bench affords a certain level of privacy, but its open slat construction also creates a sense of openness, a feeling of connection to the work environment and its specific organisation. Because it also generates engaging space outside its rounded walls, Cloister really is an architectural tool for open and public space situation,

It is composed of 95 wooden section assembled together on site by means of steel brackets.

The installation also include a series of 3 lights each different, yet based on the same construction principle and material. This series of light creates relief from the homogeneity of office lighting design.

The wooden elements of this specific version of the bench has been made from Bloomberg discarded pallet wood and manufactured by H&#38;BWRP

		<description>HFDL outdoor furniture
2010, Design Products Collection

In the spring of 2010 I was one of a group of designers invited to Korea by the British Council to take part in a culture-led regeneration project in the town of Gongju. I developed some outdoor furniture for the Happiness for Daily Life café that was inspired by local forms of timber architecture.

Inspired by this experience, I designed for the RCA design products collection a range of outdoor furniture using the vibrant colours of ‘Dan Cheong’—
a traditional Korean decorative colouring used on temples and palaces.

		<description>Hobby Crafter
2010, V&#38;A / presented by Clare Cumberlidge and Co

The Hobbycrafters guide has spent the last few months locating hobby craft producers who live, work and study in the area around the V&#38;A museum. We invited these makers to come to the museum, talk about their favourite item in the collections and their hobby. The resulting movie and printed map act as an amateur and alternative guide to the galleries of the V&#38;A.
The printed map has been designed by Surya Son.

		<description>About

I am a furniture designer interested in the potential of using local manufacturing capacity as way of creating social infrastructure and as a material resource. I graduated from the Royal College of Art where my graduate show included an investigation into the finite economy of Christmas trees drawing on this local ressource to create furniture from the discarded wood. Since then, I worked closely with local manufacturers to survey and map the available production resources in different areas of London, but also in Lisbon; Portugal and Venice; Italy. The resulting products and furniture manifest a potential in manufacturing and intend to reveal an unexpected aspect of the neighbourhood. I also undertake commissions in the field of products and furniture design where I express my sensibility in the creative use of ressources. My practice embrasses different context ranging from limited editions to industrial production and site specific installation.
I live and work in London.

2010, Fondazione Claudio Buziol

During a three months residency program in Venice, I undertook a series of research about the role of venetian crafts and artisans in the visionary city.

The public life in Venice is organised around the campo (square). These squares have been designed around the source of drinkable water. Inspired by the use of the public water tab by the locals I magically turned buckets and other watering cans, into glass to create a installation that acts as a public fountain.

		<description>Made in Odivelas
2009, British Council
Curated by Clare Cumberlidge and Co

I voluntarily got ‘lost’ in Odivelas, a suburban area of Lisbon, uncharted by the tourism information office. I met manufacturers, makers, and craftsmen. I surveyed and mapped local production ressources. This map was manifested on a set of ceramic jugs and drinking vessels which I collaboratively created with a local ceramicist.

		<description>Brick Glass
2010, Fondazione Claudio Buziol

During a three months residency program in Venice, I undertook a series of research about the role of venetian crafts and artisans in the visionary city.

Brick and glass is a series of Murano glass pieces that reflects the local environment of the venetian craft.
